French Onion Fail

Don't be fooled by this photo - this soup was not so good. It was bland and honestly, just ok. This marks my third stab at making French Onion Soup and I still have not mastered the recipe. I am looking for recipe suggestions (preferably for Slow Cookers) if you have been successful in your FOS journey. Help a sista out!

Giants Colors?

Dress, Belt and Booties from Target / Sweater from Urban Outfitters Clearance! /
Tights from K-Mart / Necklace from Forever 21

My roommate would kill me for mixing patterns here! This is a recent work outfit and I love the colors together. This dress was such a great find at Target two years ago (on clearance for $7!) and I love thinking of new colors to pair it with. Also, these booties are one of my favorite pairs of shoes right now. They are so comfortable and they look great with tights. Check out Amelia from Ugly Duckling's post on Suede Cowboy Boots for other options.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Nerd Alert

So, a neutron walked into a bar and said "I’d like a beer, please."

After the bartender gave him one, he asked "How much?"

"For you?" said the bartender "No charge."

Kalamata Olive Hummus

I don't think I tried hummus until high school. I absolutely love it now and successfully made my own over the weekend. I found this recipe and made some modifications to it. I had to add some olives since I am an olive fanatic and they were such a yummy touch. Enjoy!

  • 1 16 oz can of chickpeas
  • 1/4 cup liquid from chickpeas can
  • 4 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 table spoons olive oil
  • 10 pitted Kalamata olives
  • 2 tablespoons Kalamata olive juice
  • 1 tablespoon chives
Drain can of chickpeas and put the juice aside to use for later. Add chickpeas, lemon juice, garlic, salt, olive oil, olives, and olive juice in food processor. Add juice from can and process for 3 minutes or until you have reached a creamy consistency.

Create a small "pond" in the center of the hummus and fill with small amount of olive oil. Garnish with chives and serve with pita bread, carrots, broccoli, etc.

(Please Don't) Let it Snow

Shirt and Gloves from Target / Pants from Loft / Boots from DSW /
Hat from H&M / Scarf was a Gift

After leaving eight inches of snow behind me in Chicago, I was welcomed home by more Saturday. I have a love / hate relationship with snow. Yes, it is beautiful but I'm a wimp about the cold. Perhaps proper boots would keep my feet warm. For now, please don't let it snow!

Chicago in January

Here are some photos from my past week onsite for work. After several inches of snow fell on Friday, I was worried I wouldn't make it home on time. Thankfully, I made it home. Exhausted.

Oh the Places You'll Go!

You'll be on your way up!
You'll be seeing great sights!
You'll join the high fliers
who soar to high heights.

You won't lag behind, because you'll have the speed.
You'll pass the whole gang and you'll soon take the lead.

Wherever you fly, you'll be the best of the best.
Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.

 - Dr. Seuss

Happy Birthday to a miss Erin! Cheers to a lifelong friendship!

Ladies Date Night

Blazer from Target / Shirt from Limited / Jeans are old /
Shoes and Clutch from Ruche / Scarf was a gift from my sister

I started this blog with every intention of photographing my outfits. I must ask fellow bloggers, how do you find the time to take pictures every day? A new blogging goal for myself is to take outfit pictures at least once a week. Oh and not to look so awkward.

I wore this outfit to dinner with my college roommate at a kebab joint last week. Please excuse the eerie, green lighting in the background.

Meet Kendi

Kendi has been one of my favorites since I was introduced to the blogging world. Her style is colorful and cheery, while her writing is witty and makes me laugh. I absolutely love her photos and her sense of humor. On her about me page, she writes "My style is simple and my writing is equal parts self deprecating, silly and sarcastic." What is not to love?

Below are some of my favorite outfits she has worn. I may just have to copy some of them soon. I feel as though we use very similiar color palletes (bright!). She has a way of pulling outfits off and is great at re-styling and re-purposing items. Kendi first started a style challenge called 30 For 30 which is where bloggers take 30 pieces of clothing and make 30 different outfits. I would really like to participate in the next one because it would force me to be more creative with what I have.

Four Peaks Brewery

While in Arizona, we made a visit to the Four Peaks Brewery to watch the Giants game and for some brew samples. The couple we were visiting actually met while working here. Great beer, fun atmosphere, hipster beach cruisers parked outside. What a wonderful ending to our weekend.

Livin' on a Spare

Let me preface this by saying I am not a good bowler. In fact, I am usually hoping to break 100. But when the opportunity came to join an intramural bowling team through work, the idea seemed fun. We have a team of ten, but we rotate each week so only four players are bowling each game. Before registering, we needed to come up with a team name and a co-worker suggested "Livin' on a Spare" (though I am fairly certain he googled popular bowling team names).

Immediately, I began to think of what our logo might look like. What objects do you think of when you think of bowling? Pins, shoes, bowling balls. And then I started putting together those objects and realized a pin and ball together could look like the "P". I was worried this wouldn't read very well but I think it definitely does.

Not far off from my original sketch, here is our official logo:

What do you think?

These few photos below are from my Vermont trip with my girlfriends. We are all picture crazy! I like the different perspectives of these shots.

Photo I took of a wall map:

Lyndsay taking a photo of me taking the photo of the map.

And Kendyll taking a photo of Lyndsay taking a photo of me taking the photo of the map.

Ok, so I'm feeling a little silly since it is Friday and all. I am travelling next week for work so I may be a little quiet. Have a great weekend and week people!

Cookies and Cream Cupcakes

These cupcakes are delicious. I made these for various gatherings and every time people have told me how much they loved them. Although the ingredients are not cheap (Oreos cost more than $4 a bag!), I think they are worth making for special occasions. I found the recipe here.

Cookies and Cream Cupcakes
Preheat the oven to 350˚ F. Line the wells of two cupcake pans with 24 paper liners. Place an Oreo halve in the bottom of each liner, cream side up. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt; stir together with a fork to blend and set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer, combine the butter and sugar and beat together on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Blend in the egg whites one at a time, beating well after each addition. Blend in the vanilla extract. With the mixer on low speed, beat in half of the dry ingredients just until incorporated. Add the milk and beat just until combined, then mix in the remaining dry ingredients. Gently fold in the chopped Oreos with a rubber spatula until evenly incorporated, being careful not to over-mix.

Evenly divide the batter between the prepared cupcake liners. Bake for 18-20 minutes, rotating the pans halfway through baking, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pans 5-10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

To make the frosting, combine the cream cheese and butter in the bowl of an electric mixer and beat on medium-high speed until smooth, about 1 minute. Blend in the vanilla extract. Beat in the confectioners’ sugar until incorporated and smooth, 1-2 minutes. Add the heavy cream to the bowl and beat on medium-low speed just until incorporated, then increase the speed to medium-high and whip for 4 minutes until light and fluffy, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.

Frost the cooled cupcakes as desired. Sprinkle with Oreo crumbs and garnish with Oreo halves.

Baby Shower Outfit

I was going to start off apologizing for the brightness of the photo. But then I thought about how sunny it was in Arizona (In January!) this weekend and realized I'm happy it's bright. We took this photo Saturday morning on our hotel balcony. Please note the bare legs. We had to stop at a gas station to buy disposible razors.

This skirt was an Anthro splurge but I wanted something nice for the shower and figured I could wear this for work. I have worn it styled a few other ways so far, but this is my favorite. You know when an outfit just makes you feel great?

Shirt from Land's End / Skirt from Anthropolgie / Shoes from Urban Outfitters /
Necklace from Target / Watch from Modcloth

Looks like Kendi from Kendi Everyday splurged on this skirt as well.
